She also holds a Ph.D. in Sport Psychology from the University of Virginia. Betsey’s teaching is vibrant with her passion for yoga and special expertise in progressive teaching (description below).

Progressive Teaching with Betsey Downing:
The art of progressive teaching is one of the most empowering skills you can cultivate as a yoga teacher --- it can take you and your students to places you previously thought impossible!  This method is based on understanding how to break down challenging poses into their component parts and systematically teach the skills necessary to master those parts.  Mastering this technique allows you to challenge your students safely and appropriately.

We begin with a structured progressive asana practice moving toward a pinnacle pose(s).  We will analyze the ingredients of the pinnacle to understand the logic behind the sequence.  In the afternoon we analyze other challenging pinnacle poses, break them apart into their components and create a series of poses that lead logically toward the pinnacle.  We also create class sequences that you can use in your teaching.
